Band: After Forever
Can you tell me what happened since the release of your last record?
The reactions were very, very positive. Especially The Netherlands and Belgium reacted great. We have promoted the cd by turing around The Netherlands and Belgium. We play two times a weekend until the end of March.
How satisfied are you with your new record (the songs, the sound)?
I am very proud of the results. I think we improved ourselves when you compare the album with ‘Prison of Desire’. I think every member of the band has personally grown, but also as a group. I think too that the songs have a better structure and form, the lyrics are better to understand as well. It’s all more adult now. The production and the sound is better as well. We had more time for the recordings and had some more experience this time. Together with the studio people we created a sound we’re all proud of!
How are the reactions of the press?
Very good! We became cd of the month in several magazines. Though the big magazines in Germany like Metal Hammer and Rock Hard didn’t respond very great but smaller magazines (not less important!!) responded very positive and more serious. Thank you all!!
What can you say about the cover and the title?
They are connected to each other. The title embraces al the texts. It was difficult to find one title for these different texts because the subjects are so different. We choose for Decipher because the only thing that connects the texts is that we ask questions to the reader in every one of them. You need to Decipher it! The cover is a interpretation on this title and al it’s different meanings. You can find your own meaning in it. The sun is a element that shines it’s light on the questions. The eye sees the things we see in our texts etc.
What are your lyrics about?
The texts are writing by Mark and me. We don’t write together, we just do the half of it each. Mark’s texts are about relious subjects and especially the fundamentalism. He’s just very interested their culture, he doesn’t judge, just observes. He also writes about the position of woman in these countries.
My texts are more about feelings you can have, or subjects were I have questions about. One text, (Imperfect Tenses) is even a bit autobiografic. It’s about me being teased a lot as a kid. The male singer tells me the things my teacher at the time should have said. In every text I ask questions to and about myself and the world around me.
In my opinion your music sounds a little bit like Therion and Nightwish. How would you describe your music on your own?
I think we have elements in our music that can be compared to the bands you mentioned. I do think we have a sound of our own. We combine several styles of metal with classical influences and even some pop things. It’s difficult to give it one name. It needs a describtion to be complete!
From where do you have your influences?
I personally get my influences from everything I hear. I listen to metal mostly but I like to listen to good singers. So you could say I got influenced by metal, musical music (Andrew Lloyd Webber) and popmusic of any kind, though my heart lies in metal.
How do you create your songs?
We write them together but it starts with a small part of music Mark or Sander made at home. Mark took care of most of the keyboardparts and Sander for the guitarparts. They come with the parts and we put them together at the rehearsels. I make my singingparts during the rehearsels (some parts change because the singing parts will fit better, that’s why it’s important for me to be woith every rehearsel), I usually finish and perfect them at home. Than the lyrics will be written by either Mark or me.
Did anyone of you study music?
Yes, I study on the Rockacademie in Tilburg, The Netherlands. It’s a new education for modern music. I am the only one. The school is really great and good for the band as well.
Do you have any kind of idols?
I personally don’t and never seriously had. I do admire people for their skills but I don’t have idols
Can you tell me how do you play a live show? Do you have a complete orchestra with you?
Our live shows are very important to us. We used a lot of extra’s on the cd Decipher but always made sure it would sound great as well when we play it live. We habe a disc running along with the orchestra and choir. We only use it in 3 or 4 songs. The rest sounds bombastic and good without it. We want to sound real but we cannot aford a complete orchestra every time, it would be great though!
What would you do if you have three whishes for free?
Make the three wishes of course....
Do you have any last words?
I hope to visit your beautifull country more often. We will play at the Summer Breeze Festival this summer and that is the first time. We hope to come back and enjoy the big beers and the schnitzels and the good metal people! Hope to see ya!!!!!
