Band: Calvaria

Calvaria is a band from Mexico. I discovered them in the internet by accident. As I first saw their artwork I considered them to be a Death Metal band, but the surprise was big: Calvaria are a Power Metal band with high vocals and much speed in the vein of old Helloween. A very nice surprise indeed. And the best is, that the quality is also better than from most bands from over there…

Okay, let us start with your history! I´m pretty sure no one else has heard here from you…

OK, the band was formed at the end of 1998, throughout this time we’ve been playing in the main rock stages in Mexico city and some other Mexican cities trying to make a name within the Mexican scene and we have been very fortunate because we have been chosen to be the opening act for very important bands like Gamma Ray (Germany), Angra (Brazil), Rhapsody (Italy), Shaman (Brazil), Rata Blanca (Argentina) and Medina Azahara (Spain) and the response from the audiences has been great, and also we have had very good response from the press as well. So at the beginning of this year we released our first CD and we are currently playing everywhere we can to promote the CD. That´s the story so far. Oh, yeah, the line-up is:

Mario Montaño (Vocals), Vicente Gazano (Keyboards), Juan Pablo Agudelo (Guitar and Vocals), Oswaldo Blanco (Guitar), Laszlo Kalloi (Bass Guitar) and Juan Pablo Ramírez (Drums).

I really like this question: What are your main influences? Do you prefer the older generation in Metal or the new young bands?

Well, our sound is the combination of both, we take elements from the classic Metal bands and also from other musical genres like classical and progressive but our main focus is to have a fresh and current sound so we are very aware about what is going on in the musical environment worldwide. So we like both of them but finally we play the music that comes out of our hearts, the music that we feel without thinking too much about it.

That´s the way it should be! Tell us a little bit about the history behind your CD. How many copies did you make? Is it selling well? How are the reactions so far?

Well actually I don’t remember how many copies we made but the CD is selling well so far, of course we want to sell more copies so we’re trying to get our music to every person we can but the reactions have been very good until now, and we’ve sent CD’s to Greece, Norway, Germany, Spain, Argentina and some other countries and fortunately everyone has liked it and the overall reaction here in Mexico has been very good also.

(Very long sentences from you, by the way…) Please tell us the story behind your name and the meaning for you…!

Calvaria is the upper part of the piece of armor that covers the skull. It comes from the Latin word Calvaria (skull) that gives its name to the hill located near Jerusalem where Jesus Christ was crucified (Mt. Calvary or Golgotha), this is the place where all the sacrifices and executions took place at the time, thus the name.

What does Metal mean to you?

Metal is the music we love, our lifestyle, something we feel related to, it’s like a religion that unites all Metalheads around the world.

Goddamn right! What are your plans for the future?

Well, as I told you before we are now playing everywhere we are given the chance to promote our CD and to take the name of Calvaria to as many people as possible all around the world, meanwhile we are composing new songs to release our second album at the beginning of the next year hopefully, we are also making English versions of the songs so we can reach a much wider audience and if possible get a wordwide distribution deal.

Do you have any friendships to other bands? How involved are you in the Mexican Power Metal scene? Is there a scene? Which music is most like din Mexico? Who are the Metal heroes over there? How is it to be a Metal-fan there?

That’s a very long question, ok, first of all, being a Metal fan here in Mexico is a good thing nowadays because most big bands are including Mexico on their tours so we get the chance to see very good bands over here, I mean, not as much bands as in Europe but the biggest ones at least, the problem is that we have two big communication monopolies over here that control all the media and are only supporting commercial "music" so everything related to Metal is underground but the Metal audience and the people getting involved with this kind of music is growing everyday so it’s not so bad.

The Metal heroes are the same as everywhere I think, the classic bands like Maiden or Priest and also the new bands like Helloween (new??? – Editor), Gamma Ray, Stratovarius, Rhapsody, Iced Earth, Children of Bodom, etc…

Speaking of a Power Metal scene here in Mexico is difficult because there is not such, there is more like an overall Metal scene formed by bands of various styles like heavy, power, speed, thrash, death, etc. and sometimes the shows you go to are composed by all these different styles which is a good thing, in think, ‘cause people can be open to a lot more musical styles and not just one, but speaking strictly about power/speed metal bands there are just like 3 or 4 bands, mostly new bands including Calvaria which is more or less like the head of this movement of new melodic bands.

We do have frienship with other bands from various styles and we try to help each other in any way we can so it’s a cool thing but it’s also funny because the biggest support we have gotten is from Death Metal bands.

What are your strengths? How will you avoid from drowning in the huge Power Metal scene?

I think we have a very particular style that is not pure Power Metal or any other genre, it’s more like a combination af various musical styles and a wide variety of influences going from classical music to Death Metal resulting in a sound that has little pieces of everything and yet sounds like nothing else, I think we have our own sound, we are aware that it takes a long time to find your own style without imitating anyone but I think we are on the right track. Finally what makes a band great are good songs ,no matter what style you play so that is our goal, to make good songs and to make honest music which people can be related to.

Imagine I were the Metal-fairy and you had three wishes. How would they look like?

A tough one. First of all, we’d like to have the inspiration and capability to write great songs that would become metal classics and which people could feel related to. Also to keep the band together and working real hard and well to make great records and outstanding tours so we can make a living of what we love doing, playing music. And finally, we would wish to be recognized worldwide for being a great Metal band and the first one from Mexico to reach wordwide success.

Which question do you want to be asked, but nobody does?

"Do you want to sleep with my beautiful younger sister? "

What about my younger brother??? What are your last three bought CDs?

Judas Priest - Demolition, Stratovarius - Intermission, Iced Earth - Horror show.

Brainstorming time (write down the first things coming to your mind):

What do you think about the huge amount of Power Metal bands? Do you think the "boom" is good? Do you believe most of the bands are still good and deserve a contract? Where will all this lead to?

Ok, it’s good to have a lot of people interested in this kind of music but the bad thing is people playing this type of music just by trend, there are lots of good bands but also lots of them that suck so a band is not good simply because they play this style, you have to search for the ones that you like, the ones with an interesting sound and proposal, those who are honest and that truly feel their music and transmit something with it ‘cause that’s the final goal of music, to be a form of expression.

What did you do for promotion up till now? Any news/secrets to tell?

Well, as I’ve told you before just trying to spread the word in any possible way.

Where can the fans buy the CD? How much does it cost?
